Experience:

Prison Psychiatric Facility

Julie has worked at the Texas Prison Psychiatric Facility where she did individual counseling and group counseling for pedophiles as well as other sex offenders.  She believes this has greatly enhanced her current private practice work with sexual addiction clients, as she has seen the heartbreaking end result of this addiction going untreated.  Seeing the devastation of this population in prison increased her zeal to see healing in those entrapped by an addiction where they can literally lose everything they have, including their freedom.

Church Counseling Center

After working in the prison psychiatric system, Julie worked in the counseling center at Houston’s First Baptist Church.  She remembers others asking her at that time how she could handle such a vast transition from Texas’ most hardened criminals to counseling in a church.  Her reply was sometimes (tongue in cheek) “the only difference is there are no prison bars holding them.”  But on a more serious note, she has stated how she imagines the difference:  “the unbound clients have merely voluntarily entered the ‘hospital’ earlier.”

Leader in Sexual Brokenness Ministries

Julie’s work at the counseling center at Houston’s First Baptist Church included individual and group counseling.  At HFBC, Julie started the first group to deal with sexual addiction issues with the spouses group in which she called SARAH (acronym for Sexual Addiction Relational Awareness and Healing).  This opened the door for her to start several other therapy groups addressing sexual issues, such as female sexual addiction groups she named FSR (Female Sexual Redemption), and also sexual abuse groups.

Premarital Counseling

Julie worked in the Prepare for Marriage Program at HFBC, speaking at the weekend workshop on conflict resolution as well as speaking on sexual addiction in the Newlywed class.  She continues to do premarital counseling and is certified as a Prepare Enrich counselor.

Certifier of  New Christian Sexual Addiction Counselors

Julie has been a promoter of getting more Christian Counselors trained in the area of sexual addiction.  She has served as Board member for the American Association to certify Christians in this area and has held the position of Certifier of Christian Sexual Addiction Specialists with Mark Laaser.  This organization has since gratefully fallen under the umbrella of AACC (American Association of Christian Counselors).

Julie on TV and Videos  on the issue of Abortion

Many pregnancy centers in the United States feature a video for their clients where Julie and a Gynecologist are being interviewed by a Houston newscaster.  The newscaster interviews the Gynecologist on the medical effects of abortion and interviews Julie on the psychological effects of abortion.  Julie is also featured on international television in a Focus on the Family spot on Post Abortion Syndrome.  In addition, she has been involved with LifeHouse Ministries, A Christ-Centered sanctuary for those touched by an unplanned pregnancy.  She has had groups in her private practice for clients who suffer from the shame and negative relational effects  (usually unknowingly) of having had an abortion in their past.  She loves watching the “aha moments” as each participant starts to understand for the first time the events that followed that decision.  Julie states that it is a great privilege to witness God’s healing of the bondage of their past and observe the outcome of freedom.  She never ceases to be amazed at God’s true miracles in each participant of the group. Julie states, “God hosts the show, invites me in, and I get to watch a beautiful picture of redemption unfold right before my very eyes.”

Counselor for Focus on the Family

Julie has worked full time in the counseling department for Focus on the Family.  She was featured with James Dobson in the section “from the experts” in the Focus on the Family magazine below:

Radio Co-host

Julie has co-hosted a Colorado Springs radio show with topics on sexual brokenness and the Christian community.  You can find her testimony on podcast via iTunes®  (iTunes software is required).

Private Practices in 2 states

Currently, Julie practices full time at Wings of Hope Counseling Center, where there are 2 offices, one in Colorado Springs and the other in Houston.  Wings of Hope offers individual, couple, group, phone, and intensive therapy.  Julie has held 3-5 day marriage intensives that incorporate experiential exercises for couples who have struggled with sexual addiction, marital infidelity, or other issues interfering with the joy God intended for marriage.  She has also used the intensive format for individuals as well as parent/child and other populations.

In addition, Julie speaks and holds workshops in various cities that address topics such as sexual brokenness, couple recovery, spouses of those struggling with sexual compulsivity, sexual abuse, codependency, female/male sexual addiction, and ministering to the sexually broken.

Other Past Experience

As people get to know Julie on a personal level and little by little hear of her stories, many ask her if there is anything she has not done.  Julie’s experiences, career and non-career, have all helped her in connecting with clients from all walks.  From growing up a PK (preacher’s kid) to living overseas, flying, scuba diving, teaching Precepts bible studies, working as a pharmaceutical sales rep, school teacher, school counselor, teaching college, making the worst of mistakes, skiing, tennis, golf, piano, working herself through college as a hairstylist, having it all and having none… God has not wasted one thing.

Julie states:

“Amongst all those times, the good and the bad, God knew the purpose of the tapestry He was weaving in my life.  The most significant times in all of these, however, have been those times of brokenness.  For had that alabaster box remained unbroken, the inward Holy Spirit could never have come forth (Mark 14:3 talks of the alabaster vial of perfume).   Although brokenness is a path sprinkled with blood from our wounds, it is the way of blessing, fragrance, and fruitfulness. I have learned that every bit of it has been filtered through the hands of a loving heavenly Father.  Be it flying in His skies or scuba diving the bottom of His ocean, be it in calm days or dismal storms, I will praise Him.”
