About t he Practice
Wings of Hope is located in two states, Colorado Springs, CO and Houston, TX. Although Colorado is the home base (and the office in the photos), Julie makes regular trips to the satellite office in Houston. Wings of Hope offers individual, couple, group, phone, and intensive therapy.
Accomodates High Profile People
Some clients are in high profile positions, or for other confidentiality concerns seek a therapist outside their local area. In addition, people live in an area where there are no Christian counselors who are also CSATs (Certified Sexual Addiction Therapists). For these clients and those with other reasons who desire an out of town therapist, she offers regular phone sessions. Many choose to at some point supplement the phone sessions with one or more in-person intensive sessions where the client travels to Julie’s location or Julie flies to theirs.
Sexual Addiction Program
Julie provides a well thought out and structured program for individuals and couples based on the research model provided by Patrick Carnes. She recognizes that healing is much more than mere sobriety from the acting out behavior. In addition to help towards sobriety, using a trauma model, Julie provides therapy for the deeper issues behind the addiction. She states that trying to heal from this without God is like rearranging furniture on the Titanic, it’s still going to go down. That is why the central part of the counseling process is spiritual. All research and training is filtered through scripture, and if it is inconsistent with scripture, it is not a part of her program. She has seen God do wonders in this area, bringing clients and marriages from brokenness to restoration, affecting generations.
Intensives
Julie has held 3-5 day marriage intensives that incorporate experiential exercises for couples who have struggled with sexual addiction, marital infidelity, or other issues interfering with the joy God intended for marriage. She has also used the intensive format for individuals as well as parent/child and other populations.
An intensive is another option for a couple or individual to schedule a larger block of time than the typical 45-50 minute sessions once a week. Especially with couples, by the time they settle into a traditional session and both have been able to explain and discuss the issue, then there is barely enough time to get into treatment and before you know it, time is up. So the dilemma for the therapist is “Do I dig into this till the last minute so we can have some headway but have them leave raw and ready for a bigger fight on the way home, or do I just barely scratch the surface and then wind down in enough time for them to leave fairly amicably with each other on the way out and pick up again next session?” With this 45 minute setup, time can be wasted at the beginning and the end with couples. So in order to get to the deeper issues without concern for having to quit at a crucial time, Julie suggests a larger block of time. It can be anywhere from 2-4 hours typically. Occasionally, she may have longer sessions than 4 hours in the same day if someone is coming from out of town and has limited days. Local clients usually choose to do this on one day periodically, and out-of-towners typically schedule 3-5 days in a row.
Premarital counseling
Julie is a certified Prepare-Enrich Counselor, through Life Innovations, Inc. www.prepare-enrich.com
This is a well designed program that assesses strengths and weaknesses of the couple in all the major areas that research has shown to be significant determinants of marital success. After assessment, the couple is counseled according to their results. |
